Maxwell read architecture at Kingston University, graduating with honours in both his undergraduate degree and graduate diploma.
His early career included formative roles at notable firms such as Frederick Gibberd Partnership, where he contributed to large-scale mixed-use residential developments, and Stephen Taylor Architects, an award-winning studio where he worked on bespoke and international projects that included a bookshop in Paris, a church refurbishment in the South of France, and a shortlisted school competition in Switzerland.
Following his studies, Maxwell joined Murphy Philipps Architects, where he was involved in educational and healthcare schemes, notably contributing to the development of an innovative CAMHS facility that later served as a model for similar projects across the UK.
Driven by a desire to focus on more bespoke and design-led architecture, Maxwell moved to Green Lee Architects, where he worked on a new-build house and a complex basement refurbishment.
Maxwell joined Timothy Hatton Architects in 2006 and for nearly 20 years at the practice, he became a pivotal member of the team, rising to Associate in 2013 and later Senior Associate in 2022. At Timothy Hatton Architects, he has led projects spanning conservation, high-end refurbishments, and new-build houses and countryside estates, contributing to the practice’s renowned reputation for design excellence, craftsmanship, and meticulous project delivery.
