The project is a new build family home surrounded by woodlands. The project design approach is to create a collection of buildings that reflect the site’s rural context. The design can be best described as a modern interpretation of a traditional farmstead. Historically, agricultural buildings were often arranged around a central courtyard, which served as the initial inspiration for the proposed dwelling. Through a series of design iterations, this concept evolved into a fragmented and dispersed building form, resulting in a series of courtyard spaces. These courtyards enhance the building's relationship with the landscape and create framed views of the surrounding countryside.
The layout of both the site and the proposed dwelling has been developed through a comprehensive design process. Various configurations were considered, focusing on the relationship between the building and its setting, as well as the interaction among the building’s constituent parts. The proposed building layout aligns with these landscape features to further enhance this visual connectivity. Carefully designed apertures within the building's stracture strategically frame views of both the immediate site and the distant landscape.
The architectural language of the proposal adopts traditional rectangular forms with pitched roofs, referencing the typology of rural agricultural buildings. Each primary building component is connected via flat-roofed, subservient link structures, which maintain the conceptual integrity of a dispersed farmstead.
The interiors are beautifully crafted and practically bespoke in every aspect. The internal material palette reflects the building’s character, featuring a restrained selection of precast concrete beams and columns, oak flooring, marble, natural stone, handmade tiles, and dark wood wall panelling.
