PROJECT 05
The project is a contemporary refurbishment of an apartment with a large roof terrace, located in central Rome, Italy. Originally composed of two separate apartments, the property has been unified into a single, expansive residence. The transformation engages both spatial and infrastructural reconfiguration, responding to the unique conditions of the site and the building’s typology.
Situated within a dense urban block, the apartment occupies a transitional threshold between the street and an internal courtyard, characteristic of Roman urban fabric. Unlike the more conventional linear apartment layouts that present a duality of street-facing and courtyard- facing façades, this unit is organized around a square footprint with four external elevations. Each façade is punctuated by windows and small terraces, allowing natural light to permeate the interior from multiple orientations and enabling effective cross ventilation. This spatial permeability significantly enhances the atmospheric quality of the living spaces throughout the day.
The existing apartment had not undergone any significant renovation for decades. Services and infrastructure were obsolete and no longer adequate for contemporary living standards. The initial phase of the intervention involved a full strip-out down to the shell and core, followed by a comprehensive renewal of all building services, extending from the apartment interior to the extensive roof terrace above.
The internal layout has been reimagined to accommodate a series of generous reception areas, multiple bedroom suites, staff quarters, and utility zones. Particular attention was given to material specification and detail resolution, with bespoke design elements deployed throughout. Timber floor panels, finely profiled architraves, and carefully executed vaulted ceiling copings articulate a coherent architectural language, reflecting a restrained but deliberate approach to craft and spatial refinement.
