PROJECT 08

The project consists of a contemporary new-build house incorporating private parking and a rear garden, situated on a corner plot formerly occupied by disused garages. The site lies within a predominantly residential street in South London, characterised by a consistent rhythm of late 19th-century three- and four-storey terraced housing.

The architectural response has been carefully calibrated to acknowledge and reinterpret the established context. The massing, roof form and pitch, proportions,  fenestration, and material palette acknowledges the prevailing characteristics of the surrounding context. Rather than replicating historic styles, the design seeks to engage in a respectful dialogue with the existing fabric, contributing positively to the ongoing architectural narrative of the street.

The building is deliberately restrained in its expression. The design is rooted in a clear architectural intent, prioritising material integrity, craft, and contextual sensitivity.

The spatial arrangement of the house is directly informed by the surrounding street typology. In keeping with the neighbouring terraces, the principal living accommodation is elevated above street level to ensure privacy and provide a more expansive outlook. Accordingly, the main entrance and an enclosed garage are located at street level, with no habitable rooms on this floor. The primary reception spaces are situated on a raised ground floor, consistent with the terrace house layout on the road. However, unlike conventional terraces where the garden is typically lower, the rear garden in this design is aligned with the raised ground level, allowing for seamless indoor-outdoor connectivity. The upper floors accommodate the main living areas and bedrooms, culminating in a modest private roof terrace at the rear, offering an additional outdoor retreat.
